1What “local” actually means

When you select a folder, your browser grants us read access to those files directly on your disk. The image or video is decoded by the browser engine, in your device's memory, and then displayed on screen.

The contents of your files are never copied to a server: there is no upload step, and therefore no transfer to intercept. There is no intermediate cloud — your device reads, your screen displays, and that is all.

2Verify it yourself in one minute

You do not have to take our word for it. It takes three steps, and you can repeat them at any time:

  1. Open the viewer, then press F12 (or Ctrl+Shift+I) to open your browser's developer tools.
  2. Click the Network tab.
  3. Start a slideshow using your largest photos.
You will only see a handful of requests, a few kilobytes each: the page, the translations, the scripts. No request carries your images. If a service uploaded your files, you would see a multi-megabyte request per photo — that never happens here.

3What it changes in practice

  • No transfer time: a 4 GB folder opens as fast as a 40 MB one, because nothing travels over the network.
  • No quota: the only limit is your device's disk space, not a remote storage plan.
  • No queue: the slideshow starts immediately, even on a slow or shared connection.

4When this detail becomes essential

  • Family and children's photos, which are nobody else's business.
  • Scanned documents: ID papers, invoices, prescriptions, contracts.
  • Client files covered by a non-disclosure agreement.
  • Unpublished creative work: mockups, product shots before a patent filing.
  • Professional images under exclusivity contracts or copyright restrictions.
  • Unreliable connections: trains, hotels, filtered corporate networks.

5What we do not do

  • No account required to start a slideshow.
  • No selling or sharing of your data with third parties.
  • No AI model training on your images.
  • No automated scanning of your file contents.

6The limits, stated plainly

A website is still a website. Displaying this page, loading its fonts and measuring its audience generates ordinary network traffic, and the site uses cookies (detailed in our cookie policy). What never travels, however, is the contents of your media.

Two limits worth knowing. First, Pixora Viewer depends on your browser: a format it cannot decode — iPhone HEIC files, for instance — will not be displayed, whichever service you use. Second, local playback requires a recent browser; older browsers lack the APIs needed to access a folder without uploading it.
